The coronavirus crisis has strengthened the large technology companies in the United States. EU Vice-President Margrethe Vestager would regulate them stronger, especially Google, Facebook and Amazon.

Margrethe Vestager draws our attention to the growing dominance of large U.S. technology companies. The coronavirus has also highlighted how much dependent we are on U.S. companies. The fact that large technology companies have been strengthened by the Corona crisis only makes the introduction of uniform rules in digital markets more urgent. Vestager is trying to prevent the monopole situations experienced on Amazon, Google and Facebook from recurring in new markets.
The Danish politician aims to make large internet companies more accountable in the future. This includes both the economy and published contents. While giants can’t change who they are, they can change their behavior. The Internet should be regulated at European level. The European Commission has a specific idea of what an ideal society and economy would look like, but this is significantly different from what is seen in larger countries. In Europe, it is important that both competition and democracy are present.
