Several social media platforms have announced a change in their policies – mostly halting the data sharing requests from authorities in Hong Kong – as a response to the new national security law. Furthermore, Chinese-owned TikTok announced yesterday that it will shut down all operations in Hong Kong.

Facebook has announced it will stop fulfilling data requests from the Chinese government. Telegram, an encrypted messenger app, said it had not shared any data with the Hong Kong authorities so far and will not do so int he future.  Similar announcements have been made by Google, Twitter and Zoom.
Google, Facebook and Twitter are banned in mainland China outside of Hong Kong, largely due to the central control and censoring of the Internet, known as the „Great Firewall”.
The announcements follow the entry into force of the new Chinese national security law that will tighten central government controls in the city.  Although social media platforms are not yet restricted, plenty of users have begun to delete their previous posts that could be now deemed subversive.
